Dealing with aggression on psychiatric wards

People experiencing distress due to an acute episode of mental illness may present physical risks to themselves, to other service users and to care givers. Assessment, prevention and management of aggression and other challenging behaviours is therefore a very important part of the care approach on psychiatric wards.

The majority of patients in English National Health Service (NHS) acute psychiatric wards have experienced trauma through interpersonal violence and victimisation in their lives. Violent and aggressive behaviours to self and others can be formulated in the context of these experiences and the care provided on these wards needs to be based on such formulations.

The talk will provide the care model that subscribes to the principles of positive risk management and trauma-informed care which is increasingly used in NHS acute psychiatric hospitals.

In the mid-September 2015 the first refugees and other migrants traveling through the so-called Balkan route to the northern parts of Europe arrived to Slovenia. Until then this was not considered to be “our problem”, though situation changed dramatically after October 2015 with the arrival of a greater numbers of people. This was the moment when author started his field research (participant observation, interviews/conversations) in temporary accommodation/registration centres and at the border crossings in Slovenia in autumn/winter 2015, which was later complemented by the analysis of political, media and civil society discourse. Author concludes that the general attitude and the perception of situation changed from the humanitarian and democratic to the threat to the security/safety of Slovenia. This coincides also with the use of restrictive and authoritarian measures. The control of situation was taken over by the police and military. The most symbolic demonstration of securitization and militarization of humanitarian migration was the placement of razor wire fence along the whole border with Croatia. Used measures and public discourse lead into moral panic in parts of society. In the final part of presentation author tries to present the situation through the perspective of different parties included in the situation: guards (police officers and soldiers), volunteers, media, the general (cyber) public, and of course, refugees.

Social-cognitive factor in aggressive behaviour of adolescents

Why some adolescents more often react to provocation with aggression, while other don’t? In which aspects of their cognitive processing do they differ? Why some adolescents, if they only can, avoid physical confrontation, while it seems that others just wait for a chance to show their physical power?

The lecture will focus on aggressive and violent behaviour from social and cognitive perspective. Perceptions and cognitions – interpretations and deficits in self-regulation of emotions and behaviour as key factors in aggressive responding will be presented. Lecture will cover the following themes: processing of social information, deficits and distortions in process in content of perceptions, interpretations, reactions and self-control. While social-cognitive models of anger and aggression have a long tradition, they are still evolving and upgrading with new academic and clinical research. Along with synthesis of established models with current research, the main points of study, which has been conducted by the author with adolescents in Slovenia, will be presented. Implications of the models for practice of psychologists and practitioners from related disciplines with adolescents who exhibit aggressive or violent behaviour will be proposed.

Psychology of Persuasion and the Internet

Research shows that victim facilitation impacts compliance levels of cybercrime victims. We also know that there are psychological mechanisms that impact the extent of victim facilitation. In this talk, I will first empirically establish some psychological mechanisms that are applicable in this context, and then focus on specific area of unauthorized intrusions into computer systems. Using real world examples, I will demonstrate how psychology of persuasion is harnessed by attackers to achieve their goals and by the defenders to increase the resistance of the companies and its employees.
